Dancing to Canterbury

The music on this CD is a selection from the pieces used for the new and original ballet The Canterbury Tales, a collaboration between Pavane and Independent Ballet Wales.

We have not limited our choice of music to the exact historical period of Chaucer’s composition (he wrote The Canterbury Tales towards the end of the 14th Century). Our ballet music spans the period between the 12th and 16th Centuries and reflects the richness and variety of early music.

It also demonstrates the versatility of Pavane’s musical performance: from the edgily rough and raucous to the smoothly elegant and courtly, from the darkly sombre and reflective to the brightly vibrant and exuberant. Here Pavane’s instrumental versatility is also evident in the combinations of early woodwind, plucked and bowed strings, percussion and voices.

Pavane has been playing early music in South Wales and beyond for 15 years - in concert venues, churches, community centres, historical sites, banquets, weddings, and at outdoor events such as  medieval fayres. Pavane is very active in music education, and runs  workshops for schools in early music and dance, giving young people first-hand experience of the musical world of Tudor times.

The instruments featured on this CD are: harp, oud, medieval fiddle, renaissance recorders, crumhorns, cornamuse, shawm, tabor, tambourine, renaissance drum, and finger cymbals.

The performers are: Scott Baker, Nick Bowman, Robert Edwards. Martin Gordon, Marilyn Hughes, Janet Powell, Jayne Thomas.

Recorded live at The Riverfront, Newport, Gwent, 4th March 2006.
